রয়টার্সের একটি রিপোর্ট অনুযায়ী, বিগত মে মাসে ভারত ভেনিজুয়েলার অপরিশোধিত তেলের দ্বিতীয় বৃহত্তম আমদানিকারক দেশ হিসেবে তালিকায় উঠে আসে। এই সময় ভারত প্রতিদিন প্রায় গড়ে ৪ লক্ষ ২৭ হাজার ব্যারেল ভেনিজুয়েলার তেল কিনেছে। যেহেতু বিশ্বের প্রথম প্রমাণিত তেলের ভাণ্ডার রয়েছে এই দেশটিতেই। অন্যদিকে ভারতের বাজারে রয়েছে জ্বালানির বিশাল চাহিদা। যার কারণে এই দ্বিপাক্ষিক বাণিজ্য দুই দেশের জন্যই যে লাভজনক তা বলার অপেক্ষা রাখে না।
বাজার বিশেষজ্ঞদের একাংশের মতে, ভেনিজুয়েলা থেকে তেল কেনার অর্থ শুধুমাত্র এই নয় যে, ভারত রাশিয়ার সস্তার তেল কেনা বন্ধ করে দিল। বরং পশ্চিম এশিয়ার যুদ্ধের কারণে দিনের পর দিন দেশে জ্বালানি সংকট দেখা যাচ্ছে। সেক্ষেত্রে রুশ তেলের বিকল্প জ্বালানি আমদানি উৎসকে আরও বহুমুখী করার লক্ষ্যেই এই পদক্ষেপ গ্রহণ করা হয়েছে।
